Beauty making waves

Beauty is a wave thing. Of course, there are some particles involved. And if you’re a hair-splitting nuclear physicist who can explain the difference between a neutron and a neutrino and thirty nine different ways this may impact the retinal perception of anti-matter, you might have a valid counter argument or two. But for me, beauty is a wave thing.

   There is just something in the way that beauty clicks into place in my perception, which is like a radio tuner hitting the right frequency. You’re surfing the airwaves, all sizzle and hiss, out of sorts and irritated, and then voilà, you’ve hit the beauty spot. In tune. Music to the soul.

   We say that an issue or concept resonates with us, meaning that it appeals to us in some personal way. But it is a musical term we are using or at least a sonic term – to “produce or be filled with a deep, full, reverberating sound” (Oxford Dictionary). And what is sound other than waves?

   That gut feeling stirring you to the bone like the bass line from a song when you see something aesthetically pleasing, that is resonance. That is beauty – filling you with a deep, reverberating feeling.
